Do you dare to be yourself?

Do you dare to be yourself?

I’ll admit it, a few years back I had an identity crisis. I asked myself, who am I?

Was I…

– Ian the professional singer?

– Ian the web developer?

– Ian the social media guy?

– Ian the Christian?

– Ian the husband?

– Ian the vegetarian?

– Ian the geek?

– Ian the dad?

Depending on who I spoke to, I was a different person. It ended up getting quite confusing!

Labels

We all like to label people, but the truth is, the person we like to label the most are ourselves.

Not all of us fit in one box!

For me, it ended up being quite simple really. I suddenly realised that I could be all of the above. They were all aspects of was who I am, and that was fine. I could be a musician and a web developer- that was OK! Be interested in the arts and the sciences! I could also be a dad, a veggie and a Christian. They were all aspects, and coming to terms with this was a massive release!

So, what makes you you? Are you a #geek or a #freak? Are these just labels or do you resonate with these?

I’ve not read the book by Chris Brogan yet (the one everyone is going on about) – The Freaks Shall Inherit the Earth: Entrepreneurship for Weirdos, Misfits, and World Dominators”. It’s an obvious play on what Jesus said in his sermon on the mount. Actually, although they are different, I think we are called to be misfits and freaks. It’s when you stop trying to conform to the ways of the world that you can start doing amazing things!

That’s why I am excited to be part of this #FreakQuest

How about you?
