Facebook Ads
Facebook makes a lot of money (around 10 million dollars per day). But they’ve yet to make much from the huge mobile market. With the IPO out of the way they are perhaps understandably wanting to make more headway with their ads.
I attended a HubSpot webinar on Facebook lead by Chris Luo who is the Head of Global SMB Marketing at Facebook. This was the 2nd webinar that I had seen in the series (I saw the first which introduced the timeline features). It was very interesting, but it really struck me how blatantly they were pushing ads. Everything was about taking out an ad (either a sponsored story or Facebook Ad). Want more fans? Run a sponsored story campaign? Not got very many fans and want to drive up your likes? Take out a Facebook ad.
Don’t get me wrong, I do see the value of Facebook ads. I do think they are incredibly powerful (just look at the demographical information at your fingertips) and they’re remarkably easy to set up. But call me cynical but the whole point of the webinar was to drive up Facebook’s profits. Yes, Facebook wants to help small businesses, but was the information given in the webinar the whole picture? No. Unfortunately it was biased by Facebook’s drive to get us to take out more ads. Understandable perhaps, but annoying nonetheless.
Despite this, I thought Chris Luo presented well and I did learn quite a few new things. At the end of the day, it’s up to me and you to take the bits from webinars such as these that we want and discard the rest.
