How to Get Large Image Link Shares in Google+ (Google Finally Explains)

Thanks to the all knowing Mark Traphagen who shared this on Google+- we now know how to get large image link shares in Google+. If your posts have large images they are going to receive much more engagement, but it’s not been clear how to do that. It’s all down to the correct mark up (schema or open graph) and getting the right image dimensions and aspect ratio.

If you’re not a developer, there are various plugins that will help. I know that the Yoast SEO plugin for WordPress works really well and adds the necessary open graph tags. It’s then down to getting the correct image dimensions.

Google Explains How to Get Large Image Link Shares in Google+

Finally! we have an official help page from Google+ explaining how you can make your website content eligible to get the large “full bleed” image style when people share the content on Google+. See it at http://goo.gl/3xTeu6

The basics:

1. Use schema or Open Graph tagging with content type set to “article,” “blog” or “BlogPosting.” (There are plugins for WordPress that will enable you to set those for a content page without coding)

2. Image must be at least 506px wide, and have an aspect ratio no wider than 5:2. If you want to shoot for exact size match, use 506×303.
