I’m really getting into Google+ after a week or so using it. In many ways it combines the features of Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn but with so much more.
I think it’s fantastic that you can set the privacy settings of each part of your profile by adding circles. For example, I can share my home phone number with just my family, and my interests with friends. I think this is a killer feature.
However, I’d like it be able to set the privacy of individual contact data, employment and education. To some people that might sound overly complicated or perhaps over the top. However, it isn’t if you do more than one thing or have more than one job.
I do very different things. I am a web developer AND a musician. To be exact, I am a web developer, freelance singer and a singing teacher. My greatest issue with LinkedIn is that I can’t customise my profile for these different fields- I would almost have to have multiple LinkedIn profiles.
It would be awesome if I could share that I am a web developer with some circles, a singer with a “singers” circle and a singing teacher with another circle.
The same goes for my contact information. It would be great to share my work phone number (for my web business) with my “web” circle, and my mobile number with my “singers” circle. OK, that’s not quite how it would in practice for me, but you get the idea.
With people, you can’t always fit us in one box. Some of us do more than one thing. It would be great if we could show the relevant information to specific people.
Finally, when it comes to the “employed” bit on the profile. Perhaps I am being pedantic, but what about those of us who are self-employed?
Thanks for listening!
