Twitter’s new mute button is welcome but doesn’t solve the noise problem
As many of you will have seen, Twitter introduced a mute button yesterday. See this as a block light or a way to block someone without completely blocking them (so you can sleep easy at night!).
The mute button will mute updates from muted users on the home feed although I don’t know whether it will mute them on a Twitter list. It also won’t mute mentions, but I suppose that is understandable – that would be more of a block measure. It hasn’t been rolled out to me yet, so I can’t have a play with it yet.
It’s definitely a welcome move, but it doesn’t allow us to fully filter our feeds – to get more relevance and get rid of noise. We need more powerful controls over our feeds. I’d like to be able to – – Filter out posts with links
– Filter updates posted by specific apps (for example to temporarily remove scheduled and automatic updates)
– Show only updates with images
– Show only updates from my UK or US followers
I built the above features in to my Twitter app and WordPress plugin, Twools- http://twools.it/ and I find it helpful to keep on top of things by using it to filter out the noise. I also rely heavily on Twitter lists- I don’t know what I’d do without those.
So, what do you think? Will you use the mute feature?
