
Why Hootsuite’s Billing System is Broken
I think there are many good things about Hootsuite but I have to say their billing system is NOT one of them.
I’ve had a Hootsuite account for years, and I’ve had both a free and a pro account. I wrote 2 very popular articles on the advantages and disadvantages of Hootsuite and I try and keep them up to date as much as possible.
Recently Hootsuite have updated their prices for teams, and so I wanted to investigate and update my blog post. It used to be possible to see a list of the prices, but now it seems Hootsuite are making it much more difficult to find out.
In trying to look at the prices, it seems Hootsuite upgraded me from the free plan to the pro one. As soon as I realised that, I immediately downgraded. I thought nothing more, until this invoice came into my inbox. OK, it’s not a lot of money, but that isn’t the point!
Looking further into this, when you investigate into the pricing, Hootsuite give you a browser alert box saying that you will be upgraded to pro. It’s quite misleading and not clear. It’s then quite tricky to downgrade.
I had a similar issue some months back, and it was a real pain to be able to downgrade and get a refund. I now fear I am going to have to go through the same process.
I find it frustrating when tools and services try and hide their prices. Of course they are perfectly at liberty to do so, but it does leave a bad taste in the mouth.
I have nothing against Hootsuite and I’ve continued to recommend it to people in certain situations, but I’ll have to warn them about their billing system.
