Meeting the Rare Tea Lady, Henrietta Lovell
As I was in London for tonight’s website launch, I wondered whether I could pop in and say hi to my favourite tea companies- The Rare Tea Company. I’ve been a massive fan for years, since hearing Henrietta Lovell, the founder, on the Food Programme on BBC Radio 4. It was all a bit last minute, but Henrietta was very pleased to see me.
We had a lovely chat and I was served a wonderful hand rolled Lost Malawi Tea as well as thin slices of luscious peaches. Wow, what a taste. I was like tasting in 3D.
Henrietta is passionate about tea and about taste (and its brewing methods), but it’s clear she is more passionate about the relationship with the farmers. Forget Fair Trade- the Rare Tea Company really invests in the farmers- and they get decent wages.
Some people will look a the prices and say they are expensive and perhaps the word “rare” puts them off. We’re still a Tea Bag Drinking nation. The thing is, that drinking tea from tea leaves works out cheaper because you don’t just drink the first steep- the 2nd and 3rd are even more wonderful. Apparently there is a Chinese saying that you Give the first steep to your enemy, the second to your wife and you keep the third to yourself!
So, if you haven’t branched out and started your first proper tea experience, order some now. Please note, I am not on any commission and I don’t work for the Rare Tea Company. I’m just a passionate customer and love my tea!
And thanks, Henrietta for allowing me to pop in and say hello and for the amazing cup of tea! 🙂
